What Is an SGO?

A Scholarship Granting Organization, or SGO, is a nonprofit organization that receives approved tax-credit contributions and awards scholarships to eligible students. Under South Dakota’s Insurance Premium Tax Credit Scholarship Program, participating insurance companies may receive a state tax credit equal to 100 percent of an approved contribution.

South Dakota Partners in Education administers South Dakota’s Insurance Premium Tax Credit Scholarship Program and is preparing to participate separately in the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit Program, subject to the required designation and certification.

The state and federal programs have different donor eligibility, tax benefits, and participation requirements.
